Consumers are being warned by the Attorney General, Martha Coakley to be on the lookout for recorded phone call scams requesting credit card and bank card numbers as well as Social Security numbers.
Coakley is letting everyone know to be extra cautious due to a string of complaints flooding into her offices regarding phone calls, often happening late at night on their cellular phones.
The calls are reported to be automated and identify the message as coming from the bank or their credit card company saying they have placed a lock on the card. The cardholder is then asked to enter the credit card number so that they are able to use the card again. Some consumers have even reported having been asked for their Social Security numbers.
Coakley urges people to simply hang up should they receive a call like this and to call the attorney general’s hotline at 617-727-8400. She has also offered some advice to those that have already given out their information.
If you have been the victim of one of these scam phone calls, place a fraud alert with one of the major credit reporting bureaus and report the issue to your bank or credit card company.
Credit cards and banking institutions have ways to protect your money in case of fraud and there shouldn’t be too much of a problem as long as you report the scam phone call as soon as possible.
