Citigroup has announced that hackers have gained access to the credit card information of some of its North American customers. The company told the Associated Press that hackers broke into Citi Account Online, which houses basic customer credit card information. The intruders were said to have been able to view customer names, account number, and contact information including email addresses, but the bank maintains that the hackers were unable to access more valuable customer information such as social security numbers, birth dates, or card security codes.
Citigroup, which services about 21 million credit card customers across North America, said that hackers gained access to information on roughly 1% of their total customer base. The bank said that it plans to get in touch with all of the customers affected by the attack and that they will be establishing procedures to prevent such intrusions at a later time. According to the Financial Times, who first broke the story, Citigroup discovered the hacking incident back in early May. It is unclear at this time why they waited so long to make an announcement and what changes have been made.
