Google Wallet Ditches Prepaid Credit Card Use Due to Security Issues

alt Google has removed the ability to use prepaid credit cards for payments in using Google Wallet. The move came Saturday after it came to their attention that there was a flaw in the wallet’s security layer that allowed an unauthorized person to use a phone to make purchases us an existing prepaid card balance.

“We took this step as a precaution until we issue a permanent fix soon,” said the Google Wallet and Payments Vice President, Osama Bedler in a company blog.

The security problem was discovered last Thursday by a blogger who was able to access any balances from a previously linked prepaid card simply by going to the settings on an Android phone and configuring it a certain way.

The company is working on a way to make the payment system virtually unhackable and more secure than any credit card today.

Those that wish to keep their Google Wallet information as secure as possible are urged to use the screen lock feature available on many phones. This makes it impossible to get into the system in the first place.
