altA Discover Card program called Secure Online Account Numbers will no longer be available according to an email released by the card issuer on Thursday, September 08, 2011.

The program, which allowed credit cardholders to receive a different credit card number for each online purchase will be eliminated due to increased measures for credit card security and is no longer necessary.

The disposable credit card numbers were first seen by American Express back in 2000 and soon several other card issuers hopped on board with the idea.

Discover reassured cardholders in the email that they will never be held accountable for unauthorized purchases and that many of the agreements they offer come with automatic fraud protection.

Although each card varies slightly when it comes to the amount covered for unauthorized transactions, customers can rest assured that Discover is taking the highest precautions possible when it comes to the safety of their credit card accounts.
