The idea of turning your mobile phone into a digital wallet has finally been brought to fruition as Google Wallet finally made its long awaited debut. The company has been working diligently to bring the world a new way to carry their most private information without compromising security.
Google Wallet stores the mobile phone owner’s credit card information, coupons and store discount cards right on their phone. Right now there is only one Android Smartphone capable of compatibility with the Gooogle Wallet app and that is the Sprint Nexus S 4G.
The phone has been built to include the special near field communication technology necessary for transactions through NFC readers at the retailer location. But before you get too excited and begin cutting up those credit cards, you’ll need to wait a while before the Google Wallet app is fully functional with a broader range of credit card companies and mobile devices.
Google has said that it plans on developing partnerships with many of those companies to bring the app to more cell phone providers and cardholders. Eventually they want to make the every day wallet obsolete so that anything that can be carried in the wallet can be programmed into the person’s smartphone.
Google’s vice president of payments, Osama Bedier, told the nytimes.com that some may not find the new technology all that necessary due to the fact that they can just as quickly reach into their pockets or purses and pull out a wallet as they can a cell phone but Google plans on making the idea more appealing. According to Bedier they will be adding special Google Offers for those who choose to utilize the new app.
It is Google’s belief that this is a way for them to push through the boundaries of the online name they have made for themselves and branch out into the everyday lives of people even when they are not online.
“We see the lines are blurring between online and offline, and out business can no longer be just about online activity,” said Bedier. “consumers don’t see their world as online or offline, they see it as a continuum, and we think there’s a huge opportunity here to address their offline advertising needs.”
To access the app, simply download the software update from your Sprint Nexus S 4G smartphone and import your Mastercard credit card information. Learn more by visiting google.com/wallet/get.html
