Russell Simmons, celebrity and man behind the new prepaid RushCard has announced his intentions to buy up the ad space left by Lowes for the reality show “All-American Muslim.”
The home improvement store withdrew from advertising during the show’s commercials due to pressure from a conservative group in Florida that wanted them to stop showing financial support for the show.
Simmons tweeted on Monday saying, “I’m trying to buy ads during #AllAmericanMuslim airing this Sunday, but now they are saying they are sold out. I will keep trying…”
Lowes announced in a statement to TheWrap:
"The TLC program 'All-American Muslim' has become a lightning rod for people to voice complaints from a variety of perspectives – political, social and otherwise. Following this development, dozens of companies removed their advertising from the program beginning in late November. Lowe's made the decision to discontinue our advertising on Dec. 5."
"We have a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, and we’re proud of that longstanding commitment. If we have made anyone question that commitment, we apologize."
Instead of boycotting Lowes, Simmons is urging everyone to sign a petition instead to keep other companies from pulling their ads from the show. As of Tuesday morning, the petition received 22,083 signatures towards the goal of 25,000.
Many Americans are taking a stand against this type of behavior. The conservative group which is said to be the cause of Lowes pulling their advertisement had their website hacked into on Monday night. The hackers had to go through 15 layers of security to gain access to the website, forcing the group to shut it down.
