A New Hampshire man used his debit card to buy some gas and a pack of cigarettes from a local gas station and it turned out to be the most outrageous gas prices in history, not to mention an incredibly expensive habit. After checking his account online he was completely stunned to find a charge totally $23,148,855,308,184,500! He also shared that his bank, Bank of America, had charged the $15 overdraft fee. After nearly two hours on the phone with his bank, the error was corrected the next day though it was not their fault the charge occurred.
In Texas, another Visa customer was more than a little startled when he reviewed his credit card statement to find the same 17 digit charge deducted from his account. He was certain that a meal at Wolfgang Puck’s famous restaurant was not worth quite that much and was quoted as saying, “For that amount of money, I could actually own Wolfgang Puck himself.”
According to Visa the exorbitant charges were a result of a technical issue which involved up to 13,000 transactions. “A temporary programming error at Visa Debit Processing Services caused some transactions to be inaccurately posted to a small number of Visa prepaid accounts,” read a statement released by the Director of Global Corporate Relations at Visa Inc., Elvira Swanson. “The technical glitch has been corrected, and all erroneous postings have been removed.”
Those affected by the crazy charges will not have to pay any overdraft fees associated with the glitch.
